Microsoft describes the MSDB system database as: "used by SQL Server Agent for scheduling alerts and jobs and by other features… ". In fact it stores the "service history" for the databases and can help you find out what has really happened regarding backup, and what restore time to expect. Furthermore your SSIS packages are stored in the MSDB database, so maybe you should consider changing the backup model away from the default "simple".
